Everyone loves a good time, especially when on vacation. For most of us, chilling out might be something like hanging out with friends and enjoying a couple of beers or even partying out like a rock star on the coolest clubs in the city. Having a few drinks and taking the time out isn’t bad at all, but we need to keep a few things in mind, especially if you’re in a vacation in a different country.

The legal drinking age varies from country to country all over Europe. There are different policies regarding drinking too. Blood alcohol concentration limit also varies too, averaging from 0.2 to 0.8 ranges. Some countries even have zero alcohol tolerance. Zero tolerance on blood alcohol concentration applies on countries like the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Croatia. It would be a good idea to know the alcohol limit or tolerance of the country you are in to avoid mishaps. Better yet, don’t drink too much. It would also be a good idea to carry around an ID or maybe a passport to prove your age especially if you are going to purchase alcoholic beverages. Of course we know that not being able to prove your age means refusal to sell beverages to you. Bringing identification is always a good idea. Just don’t lose it when you already have had a few drinks! For some countries, there are two legal ages for drinking; one would be for purchasing beer and wine, and one for buying stronger spirits.

Don’t throw a party on a home swap. Unless you are risking to pay for any damage that might occur on your home exchange partner’s property. You don’t want a cocktail-stained carpet or your favorite furniture’s leather covers ripped when you get home, do you?

Lastly, know how much drinking your body can tolerate. Think of your safety first before anything else especially that you are in a foreign place. If you can’t take in much, then don’t drink at all.

skiing the holiday budget away

For most of us, an ideal holiday vacation during the Christmas season would include skiing in the Alps or anywhere where the snow is good and the runs are challenging. But there is one little fact that we should face: skiing is not a cheap activity. With a bad economy that loomed over us throughout the year, our hard-earned moolahs must be spent wisely. Is it really possible to take a skiing vacation on a string? Would I be able to treat myself some decent skiing vacation with a tight budget? Well, the answer is yes. If you know how to spend your money wisely, that is.

backlitmtns8dSki resort prices on the Alps really are quite pricey, and food and accommodation prices would definitely be sky-rocketing during the holidays. So here are a couple of ideas how you could cut back on the expenses. Most ski resorts are near a small town where prices for food and accommodation are cheaper than resort prices. I would suggest finding a home exchange at a nearby resort instead of spending on hotel accommodations. For example, St. Moritz in Switzerland is famous for its slopes and with prices to match. But the place is nearby Celerina, and if you have a car rented, Pontresina, Champfer, Samedan and Livigno are just a drive away. Well worth it if you would ask me. Purchasing package flights or flying in business would definitely cut you. Renting a car is also practical. Driving your way to the nearest resort would be a great comfort, plus you could go on drive-thrus or eat out instead of dining in places just around the resort. Lucky you if you would be able to get a home exchange and car exchange deal!

Seriously, there are lost more ways to be able to enjoy skiing on a budget. All you have to do is plan things out and find the cheapest deals. Be creative on how you should spend during your vacation.

Malaga is the second most populous and sixth largest city in Spain. It is one of the cities in the European Union that experiences the warmest winters, having a Mediterranean-subtropical climate, with an average temperature of 16.6 degrees Celsius (62 degrees Fahrenheit) at the highest and 12 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit) during January. The city is rich in history and culture, with historical sites tracing back Phoenician, Roman, Arabian and Christian epochs, the beautiful sights here are endless. A day or two wouldn’t be enough to appreciate what this lovely city has in store for you.

The name Malaga was coined by Phoenicians who founded the city in 1000 BCE. The term was believed to be derived from the Phoenician word for salt because fish was salted near its harbors. The architecture in this city is perhaps a visual wonder, with Roman theater ruins dating from the 1st century BC, touring around Malaga is a travel back in time. The walls built in and around the city are traces of military fortifications during the time of Islamic Spain. Some of the must-see places to see are the Gibralfaro Castle, Alcazaba fortress, Plaza de Toros (bullring), Iglesia del Sagrario and countless museums including Museo Picasso Malaga. Pablo Picasso and Antonio Banderas were born in Malaga.

Transportation is not a problem here as Malaga has its own airport. The seaport of Malaga has been in operation since 600 BC. High speed railway system connecting to Madrid and other railway systems around the city will get you here in no time. Buses are the main means of transport in the city. To get the best experience around Malaga, why not go for a home exchange? There are a lot of homes open for swap around the city. You can start to try living like a local and experience the warm, sunny winter here. This is definitely a good place to spend the Holidays in.

travel blogging

I’ve been on the thought of how most people document their traveling experiences? Do they keep journals? Do they just take pictures? Or just keep them all as memories? Well, in the technology age, the answer was pretty obvious, people blog about their experience. Whether the goal of the writer was to share their experience or their thoughts on the whole experience, blogging becomes a new avenue for information exchange for travel-holics.

Blogging about your trips and vacations is something worthwhile to do but could also be informative to others. It may not be your sole intention to inform, but people might learn something from what you write. For example, a story about a train ride experience across the Netherlands to see the Alps might be something a person from halfway around the globe needs to get short information on how to get to the Alps. It’s pretty much like telling a story of your adventure and leaving out facts and opinions that someone could pretty much use. The fun part about blogging is the feeling of sharing your experience to everyone. You always have that excited feeling to let everyone know how much fun you’ve had on a trip. Pictures and other multimedia sources can be put on most sites to accompany your posts. Blogging is pretty cheap, as long as you have your laptop and an internet connection; then you’re all good to go! You can do it anywhere, even on the bedroom of your home exchange; talk about anything under the sun and exchange ideas with other bloggers.

All I can say is that travel blogging is a fun and entertaining way to share stories and information to other people. One is never too full of stories of experiences that are worth remembering. Spreading the word and telling your story to a bigger audience across the World Wide Web is like putting a cyber bookmark on one of the most memorable moments of your life.

Family trips

Planning out a family trip is a quite tedious job. You have to ensure that everything from the vacation destination down to the expenses of daphoto_6265_20090506ily activities will benefit everyone. What kids want usually goes into priority in considering a vacation for the family. Of course, the reason for having vacations is to have quality time with the kids to make up for them; and the primary goal is to make the time worthwhile and worth remembering.

Plan out according to the activity they want and the destination second. It would be a good idea to ask what the kids want to do rather than dragging them into a place that neither of them wants to go to. Let the kids decide. This will make them all excited and would make them be more involved with family decisions. (This is also a good way to start opening up communication lines between kids and parents!) Let them think of the activities that they want to do while on vacation. You could suggest too as parents. Visiting theme parks and historical sites are quite worthwhile and enjoyable for everyone. Sightseeing around the countryside or city destination of choice is also a worthwhile and inexpensive thing to do!

If you plan to stay on a long vacation, it would be more practical to go for a home swap or home exchange. This cuts off pricey hotel accommodation expenses and will leave more budget allotment on other things or activities. There are a lot of options for home exchanges at Homeforhome.com. Look for posts of available home swaps that would accommodate the size of your family in the place you are staying. This also lessens the hassle of booking for an accommodation at a hotel in advance, just contact the home owner and talk things out in advance.

photo_8581_20091009When traveling, you should always plan out your trip. From itineraries down to the things you should bring with you, these things should be taken into consideration and have been put a lot of thought on before hopping on that plane and taking the next flight out to your destination. Take into consideration of your health especially on long distance traveling as this might put you under a spell of stress.

Always think about your health when traveling, if your condition is not suitable for travel, then better to cancel traveling or leaving that day rather than suffering from discomfort in the middle of your trip. Don’t keep others worried by your condition. Besides, you would not enjoy a trip if you aren’t really feeling well. Bring medicines with you wherever you go, always keep it at hand especially if you are under regular medication. There won’t be any guarantee of availability of the medicine you need in the place you are about to visit. It might not be easy to get hold of your prescription drugs on the place you are in. Bring your medical insurance cards too. We can’t be sure of what happens in the future, so at least you are ready for something unexpected.

Here’s an idea when you are going for a home exchange: ask your home exchange partner to leave local numbers for emergency (such as local police numbers, emergency number, fire bureau number) and some quick sketches how to get to the nearest hospital. Your home exchange partner surely won’t hesitate giving you this information. Keep them just in case you will need them.

Today’s fast-paced, busy lifestyle has become a major cause for some of the most serious ailments. Stress is something that we have to live with everyday; at work, at school or even at home. Medical research links stress with the most deadly diseases and ailments such as heart attack, hypertension, and even some forms of cancer.  The health risk from leading a stressful lifestyle has become higher than ever. The chances of health risks doubles for city dwellers because of pollution and the modern lifestyle people lead.

photo_5700_20090408Taking a break away from all the stress, pollution and busy life is something we need from time to time. The best escape one could have is a trip to the countryside! Forget about the big city and try living in the countryside for a while. These places are more serene, so there’s more time to sit back, reflect and be one with nature. Taking a hike and enjoying the fresh air is a good activity to do. You could take beautiful pictures while on your way. Enjoy the view from the horizon without any buildings or structures blocking your view. Have a picnic or taste local specialties of the place you are in, that would be a good way to treat your taste buds without the guilty feeling of eating an unhealthy diet. Don’t think about work or anything, leave your laptops, PDAs and even your cell phones behind just for a while, just seize the moment and feel alive.

Next time you plan on taking that much needed vacay, consider spending it on the countryside. It would all be worthwhile. Here at Home for Home, there are vacation houses and places available to accommodate you for your needed stay. Browse on and look for a home exchange that best suits your needs, whether taking a vacation alone, or in groups or with your family, Home for Home surely has that home exchange possible for you.

four-legged travel buddies

dogIf you are on of those people who can’t leave home without Fifi or Spot behind, then this article is for you. As one of the many pet lovers here, I most of the time can’t leave the house without thinking of who will take good care of my dogs. Chances are, if you can’t leave them behind, you’d be bringing Fifi with you. So here are some tips on travelling with your pet.

If you are lucky to find a home exchange that accepts pets during your stay, then pack along these:

- Travel bed

A new environment sometimes upsets your pet. Being in a new environment may bring them anxiety and discomfort. To make them feel better and at home with your new place to stay, bring along their own bed. This way, it alleviates the stress brought about by a new surrounding and it feels much better than sleeping in a hard plastic kennel.

- Your pet’s favorite toy

Bringing along your pet’s favorite toy lessens the boredom they might feel. It would also keep them busy and entertained when you are staying in your temporary home. This is a big help to keep them from digging into your home exchange partner’s garden or ripping the leather of the sofa seats. Of course, we don’t want these things to happen. So better bring one!

- Pet Care Accessories

Of course your pets need the grooming and attention. Bringing along a fur comb and deodorizer at least will be much recommended. If you can’t bring them to a grooming parlor on your vacation, then bring their own shampoo or soap so you could do the grooming yourself.

- Disposable pick-up bags

Now this is a must everywhere you go. With the new surroundings, your pet will sure be uncomfortable with regards to doing number 1’s and 2’s. Pack plenty of these for easier pet waste disposal. It would be embarrassing to leave a “mark” on the place you are visiting if you don’t have disposable bags with you.

These are pretty small suggestions but might be a big help for you to have a terrific travel experience with your four legged buddy.

Swiss beauty

One of the most romantic and probably one of the most famous winter vacation spots among couples is the Alps in Switzerland. Although the Swiss Alps is a good place to go to all year-round, the most snow fall peaks around January and February. But what if you are planning to visit on a different time of year? Switzerland boasts fantastic sceneries and romantic places to go to which you can have the best views of all year round whether through a hike, a cross-country drive, a rail trip or a boat trip on the lakes. A relaxing spa at the middle of the Alps is a rewarding experience.

The Alps is not the only place to see when you are in Switzerland. There are many other places that you could go to, other must see places are Lucerne and nearby Saentis, Matterhorn, Jungfraujoch and Zurich. There are lots of art museums and tourist spots too. Enjoy the sights of castles, historical old towns and churches which are simply amusing. Because of Switzerland’s diverse culture, there is a lot to be discovered. Tease your taste buds with gastronomic delights from specialties of culinary regions to wine tasting, chocolate indulging down to haute cuisine.

If you are planning to make a trip for the Holidays in Switzerland, better look for a home exchange earlier on. The Holidays is a peak season for tourism in the country so prices for hotel accommodations are slightly higher than normal. Having a home exchange instead will definitely be a great idea if you want to cut back on expenses a little bit. Another good thing about home exchange is the convenience of having a place to stay ready even before you set your foot in this breath-taking country. So what’s the reason not to spend the Holidays in Switzerland?

Traveling with kids

An old friend and I met and caught up with each other over a cup of coffee. As we talked about our good old days of traveling in groups, she was saddened by the fact that she can’t go anywhere far from home because of her kid. So I said, “Then why not bring your daughter along with you when you plan to go on a trip again?” Who says having kids would tie you down and prevent you from going places?

kid1 Bringing kids with you on trips might even be a good idea. Of course, it’s pretty tough taking care of them when you are away form home, but it would also be a rewarding experience for you and your kids. It is a real learning experience for them to be exposed to a new environment and different cultures and lifestyles. Seeing that the world isn’t just limited to the neighborhood they are in, kids can easily adapt to new environment when they grow older. Adjusting becomes easier. Traveling and going places is a learning experience apart from school. A good idea to make the most of your trip is to take them to museums or galleries to know more about the place you are in. That would be History 101 for your little kid! Another good idea is to take them on a short hike around the countryside or bike around the city. The discoveries are endless. Kids will never forget that experience and will take these memories with them until they grow old. These are inexpensive activities, but the reward for spending quality and quantity for them is priceless.

Traveling with kids or even as a family isn’t expensive; there are family packages that you could avail. And of course, home exchange is a good idea to cut back on accommodations. Look for a home exchange that could accommodate the size of your family and wouldn’t mind if you would have kids with you during your stay. You and your home exchange partner can talk about any concerns with kids staying, but surely they wouldn’t mind. Treat your kids to a new experience. Enjoy!
